Nursing Units

Shared governance is at the center of Nursing at The Medical Center, empowering nurses to make positive changes in patient care. All units have unit-based practice committees allowing nurses throughout the organization to have input and buy-in to decisions that affect nursing and patient care. As a testament to the ongoing commitment to improve nursing care and to recognize our exceptional nursing staff, The Medical Center is pursuing Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Educational opportunities are offered in NetLearning so nurses can fulfill continuing education requirements and stay abreast of current updates in their nursing specialty. The Medical Center emphasizes professional development and offers a Clinical Ladder to encourage nurses to develop their skills and contribute to improved direct patient care.

New RN orientation utilizes a primary preceptor and lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Experienced RN orientation is individualized and based on experience and needs. Most units utilize self-scheduling to accommodate flexibility in staffing.

Bedside computers are utilized in all patient rooms to allow for electronic documentation. A Pyxis system is used for medication distribution on each unit. TVs in each patient room allow staff and patients to access The Medical Center’s educational channels for patient teaching.

Each nursing unit has its own designated Care Coordinator to assist with case management, facilitate early discharge planning and participate in daily huddles to discuss patients’ progress.

Dorothea Orem is the Nursing Theorist who The Medical Center has chosen to guide our standards in nursing practice.
