Neonatal Services

The Medical Center has a wide range of services for newborn care. Diagnostic equipment is available for transcutaneous bilirubin, hearing screening, heart echocardiography, and a full range of radiology and ultrasound equipment designed for newborns. We are a 24-bed newborn nursery unit that provides care to late preterm and full term infants. The unit is staffed by registered nurses and a unit clerk/CNA. After completion of an orientation period that is individualized to the RN in-training, their professional growth continues through ongoing educational requirements such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and S.T.A.B.L.E. training and semi-annual NRP Mock Mega Codes, as well as annual unit-based competencies. Additionally, staff members receive training in services such as lactation support and skin-to-skin care.

The Medical Center is also home to the region’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 24/7 coverage by board-certified neonatologists. The NICU RN staff receives additional advanced orientation training beyond the basic requirements for the newborn nursery staff. We have a 19-bed Level IIB NICU, fully equipped with 12 Spacelab cardio/respiratory monitors with alarm watch/remote view capability, Drager BabyTherm radiant warmers, Giraffe Omnibeds, and Drager Caleo Incubators. Around the clock respiratory support is provided by specially trained NICU RRT staff using state-of-the-art ventilation equipment.
